Startled, I sit up abruptly. I groan when I realize the clattering that woke me is that Romand somehow managed to knock over the table that they slide over the bed in hospital rooms. Lucky for him, he’s magically sound asleep.

I grumble to myself as I stand and move into the small bathroom to take a shower. There really isn’t a lot of room to move around with the toilet and sink in here.

“We need to get back home,” Tar says, making me flinch in surprise in the shower.

“Where’ve you been?” I question my wolf.

“Me? I’ve been patiently waiting to return to our mate while you’re running across the countryside, looking for another’s!”

I roll my eyes. It seems Tar has woken up on the wrong side of my head today.

Tar snaps, “Keep your snide comments out of your head. I’m tired of gallivanting. I want our mate!”

“Calm yourself. Alexandra’s completely safe. We have no need to act all irrational.”

“You think so?” he mocks me. “While you were getting your beauty rest, I was feeling all the pain Alex is in! We need to go home.”

I have no clue what he is talking about. “What do you mean all the pain that Alex is in? I feel no pain from her.” I slept well. Didn’t I? Romand and I came in to rest last night.

Nothing feels out of the ordinary. There’s a soft smell of lavender and tea tree. The she-wolf who set up the room smelled of these scents last night. Nothing feels wrong.

“You seem to have forgotten all about our mate! When was the last time you thought to call her? When was the last time anyone updated you on Alex? You’re so busy saving everyone else you forgot you left our mate to play with the wolves,” Tar seethes at me. Now he really is losing it.

“Tar, Alex is not playing with the wolves. She’s an Alpha, and she’s fine. You need to stop worrying.” As soon as I finish my sentences, pain pierces through my spine. “What in the…” I gasp before falling to the floor in pain.

Romand springs from the bed. “Alpha Corwin, are you okay? Can you hear me? Nurse!” I hear him yell.

Things feel fuzzy. Everything feels at a distance from me. A nurse enters the room. The same one from before. I can tell by her scent of lavender and tea tree. She comes close to me and places a cloth on my head. Instantly, the pain is gone. Something’s not right. The pain was real. Too real.

“Tar! Tar! Can you hear me?”

He’s gone. I can’t feel him at all.

“What did you do to me?” I yell at the nurse in rage.

“Nothing. Nothing. You were in pain. Your wolf was upset. He needed to rest, so I calmed him.” She steps back quickly but speaks plainly.

“What do you mean you calmed him?” I glare at her, fire in my eyes.

She shrugs. “Just that. When I placed my hand on your head, I calmed him.
